 Ceramics Monthly - December 2016

In 2004 I received a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council.  The objective was to
replicate authentic Japanese Shino pottery by creating clays and glazes from readily available materials.  The project included building a new gas fired kiln similar to those that the Japanese use to fire their Shino pottery.  I had mineral, chemical, and particle size analysis performed on Japanese clays and glazes and then formulated my own mixtures.  I pulverized raw feldspar in our homemade stamp mill to create the glazes that I used.  The pots were fired in the new kiln for 100 hours and then cooled for 7 days before opening.

This article, written by my friend, Stephen Driver, tells the story of my work on this project since 2004.
